Contour thread
Contour thread refers to ornamental thread. Since the 15th century, it is widely represented in folk art. Contour carving is carried out in a tree in the form of straight lines cut through the contour of the enclosed figure.

Remotely such a thread resembles an engraving. It has a clearly marked pattern, rather dry and simple. The composition is often somewhat enlivened by a variety of cuts and staining.

For this thread, use a special knife and a curved chisel. From the side it seems simplicity of thread, but it is not. It requires great skill, because here it is necessary to do without gouging and chipping wood.

Contour wood carving is most common in the Volga region and the northern regions.
